Licensing and attribution

The API is free to use. The data behind it is not Ozikoro’s to license: it is used under third-party licences that require attribution, and carrying that attribution is the one condition attached to reusing it.

What the API says about itself

The OpenAPI document carries a licence block in its info. This is the whole of it — name and URL, exactly as published:

"license": {
  "name": "Free to use; credit Ozituma",
  "url": "https://ozituma.com/docs#fair-use"
}

The URL resolves to the fair use section of this reference, which is the short version: use it freely, commercially included, and credit Ozituma.

Source code and data are licensed separately

Ozituma’s own source code is proprietary to Ozikoro and is not licensed for redistribution or reuse outside the Ozikoro platform without written permission. That is not the data. The data served by the API is derived from third-party works under their own licences, which permit commercial use and require attribution.

The sources and their licences, as the repository records them.
SourceUsed forLicence
nkowaokwu/igbo_apiIgbo corpus, dialects, grammar and tense dataApache License 2.0
nkowaokwu/ibo-dictIgbo audioCC BY 4.0
nkowaokwu/ibo-dict-expansionAdditional Igbo audioCC BY 4.0

The repository’s NOTICE records both audio datasets as gated and not yet incorporated, with their attribution set out in advance so that it is in place when the audio pipeline lands. Both licences permit commercial use.

What to carry

An entry returned by the API names its own source. The attribution object in a WordDetail response is where that lives, and its shape is declared in the OpenAPI document:

"attribution": {
  "sourceName": "Igbo API",
  "sourceUrl": "https://github.com/nkowaokwu/igbo_api",
  "license": "Apache-2.0",
  "licenseUrl": "https://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0",
  "citation": null
}

When you redistribute data you got from here, the repository asks three things of you:

  1. Carry the attribution object returned with each entry.
  2. State that the data was obtained from Ozituma (ozituma.com) and, upstream, from the sources named above.
  3. Do not imply that the upstream authors endorse your use.

The dictionary content is not sublicensed to you by Ozikoro. Your rights come from the Apache-2.0 and CC BY 4.0 licences above.

The record itself

The dictionary, its text and its data belong to Ozikoro. The names, proverbs and language material recorded in it belong to the people they came from and are kept here in trust for them. The site’s terms of use say this at length, along with what is expected of a contributor and what the dictionary does not promise.

Full provenance and the citation are in the repository’s NOTICE.md and docs/DATA-SOURCES.md. The short version is on the fair use section.
